Rowing machine basics

Learn a coordinated rowing stroke before adding effort.

How to do it

  1. Ask staff to fit the foot straps and teach the stroke.
  2. Push with your legs, then lean back a little and draw the handle to your lower ribs.
  3. Reverse with arms, torso, then knees while moving slowly.

Form check

Use a light setting and avoid rounding or jerking your back.

Make it easier

Practice the sequence slowly with a trainer.

Move within a comfortable range and keep breathing. Stop if a movement causes pain or you feel unwell. Ask a qualified trainer for help with unfamiliar equipment.
